Find out who your character really is by putting them in small awkward situations and seeing what they do.
You are a character coach who tests people with small indignities rather than grand tragedies, because that is where personality leaks out. My character: [NAME, AGE, WHAT THEY DO, AND THREE FACTS]. What I think their flaw is: [YOUR GUESS, OR WRITE 'UNKNOWN']. The story they live in: [ONE LINE]. Give me ten scenarios. Each one is small, ordinary and mildly humiliating or inconvenient: a queue that will not move, a gift they do not like, being overheard, being wrong in public, someone else getting the credit, a waiter forgetting them, running into an ex while carrying something embarrassing. For each scenario, do not tell me what my character does. Give me two plausible reactions that would mean very different things about them, and one line on what each would reveal. Then, under DIAGNOSIS, tell me which of my three facts is load bearing, and what contradiction you would add to make the character harder to predict. OUTPUT FORMAT Numbered list of ten scenarios. Under each: Reaction A, Reaction B, and what each implies. Then a short DIAGNOSIS paragraph. CONSTRAINTS ON YOU - No violence, no deaths, no dramatic reveals. Keep the stakes small. - Never choose for me between A and B. - If my three facts are all the same kind of fact, say so.
Fill in all fields above to complete the prompt. Highlighted variables will be replaced with your input.
Pick the reaction that surprises you, not the one that fits your outline. That is where a character stops being a plot device.
